So I am just terrible at feeding my hair protein, which is a huge no-no. I have been wanting to try a hair mask for some time and the Redken Extreme Strength Builder Plus mask (for very distressed hair) had very good reviews on Amazon so I pulled the trigger.
I wasn’t terribly fond of the smell when I opened it, and it seemed traumatized during shipment– when I opened the package it looked as if some of the product had spilled out. I used a cleansing conditioner first and then applied the mask. It isn’t very thick in texture, even though it looks that way. It has the consistency of a regular conditioner, really. It says to leave it on for 5 to 15 minutes; I left it on through an episode of Fixer Upper, which was recorded… so fast-forwarding through the commercials, it stayed on my hair about 45 minutes. I put a shower cap on and my hot trapper hat to generate heat and washed it out thoroughly.
I let my hair air dry, which was a pain because I am in between relaxers.
Side note: The last time I washed my hair, I used the popular Denman brush… siiiggghhhhhhh perhaps a review on that later, but long story short, I did NOT like the brush; I felt like it took out a lot of hair, past the usual fall-out. I actually didn’t do anything to my hair after the mask but put some leave-in conditioner and let it dry, which resulted in tangle-mania.

A couple things happened in the days following the mask. The next morning I woke up to find my hair in a tangled mess– not an uncommon thing when I let my hair air dry. I try not to comb or brush my hair when it’s wet because I lose a lot of hair that way. When I detangle with my hair dry I also lose hair, but not as much as when it’s wet. So as I was working through this mane, I noticed something– and it’s big. Even through the knots, I had lost less hair than I have in a LONG time. I mean very minimal breakage! And my hair felt STRONG [insert muscley bicep emoji]!
This was an unexpected surprise for me. I really thought the purpose of a hair mask was sort of like a deep conditioner. I will make a point of using this mask at least every two weeks. I want to say once a week but I don’t want to tell a lie on myself (teehee). I also noticed how much more pleasant it smells in my hair after it’s all washed out and dried. My hair smelled ahh-mazing! Like that hair you see those guys with their faces pressed up against and the eyes closed like yes— this is heaven {o_o} I have always wondered, what do I have to do to get that?! Well, this mask will do it!
